NEW ORLEANS – On June 16th, the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office (OPDA) prosecutors secured the conviction of defendant Kynomi Courtney for a shooting incident that took place near the intersection of Downman Road and Chef Menteur Highway in New Orleans East. Through the hard work and attention to detail of the OPDA trial team, led by Assistant District Attorneys (ADA) Adele Krieger and Greg Thompson, Courtney was found guilty of Illegal Discharge of a Firearm During a Crime of Violence.

District Attorney Jason Williams said, “This was a case of road rage that resulted in reckless and unnecessary violence. Our City has been plagued with cases of gun violence on our roads and highways, and this office has zero-tolerance for these senseless acts. High-quality video footage from the Real-time Crime Center of this incident was instrumental in our ability to secure a conviction and hold this individual accountable. My office will continue to maximize its use of all available tools and sources of evidence if our mission is to hold perpetrators of violent crime accountable, and the preparation of this case by ADAs Krieger and Thompson clearly represents that aim. We are grateful for the work of our partners with the NOPD, whose investigation led to the arrest in this case. Through dedication and successful prosecutions like in this, the DA’s office forwards its commitment to restore trust in the criminal legal system one case at a time.”

According to NOPD reports, following a minor traffic collision, the defendant engaged in a verbal altercation with the victim, which turned physical. Afterward, the defendant returned to her vehicle and retrieved her handgun, before firing it once. Officers also observed video footage of the incident, captured by the Real-Time Crime Center (RTCC), which led to Courtney’s arrest.

The trial took place in Section B; Judge Tracey Flemings-Davillier presided. The sentencing date is set for July 19, 2023. The defendant faces up to 20 years in prison.
