ICYMI: Part 2 of Fox 8’s Special Crime Reduction Series

New Orleans, LA – In Part 2 of the Crime Reduction Series, Thanh Truong explores the powerful impact of data and community involvement in driving down crime rates in New Orleans. By leveraging data analytics, authorities can pinpoint problem areas and identify underlying factors contributing to crime. When combined with active community engagement, these insights not only highlight where issues are occurring but also foster collaborative efforts to create safer neighborhoods and build trust between residents and law enforcement. This holistic approach demonstrates that data, when paired with the strength of community, can lead to meaningful and sustainable crime reduction.

New Orleans Data-Informed Community Engagement (NODICE)

The New Orleans Data Informed Community Engagement (N.O.D.I.C.E.) Program, in conjunction with the innovative use of Risk Terrain Modeling, marks a groundbreaking advancement in public safety and crime prevention. This forward-thinking initiative broadens the spectrum of crime prevention tools, empowering our community with cutting-edge strategies to foster safer, more vibrant neighborhoods.

N.O.D.I.C.E. harnesses the power of modern technology to pinpoint areas of vulnerability and deploy resources precisely where they are needed most. By leveraging data-driven insights, the program not only addresses immediate community needs but also proactively mitigates potential risks. It is a dynamic, strategic approach that prioritizes public safety, quality of life, and economic development, ensuring that resources are channeled into areas of greatest impact.

At its core, N.O.D.I.C.E. is about transforming the way we engage with our communities. By refining our approach to community engagement and resource allocation, we are creating environments that are less conducive to criminal activity and more supportive of growth and prosperity. This groundbreaking strategy is already enabling system partners to deploy resources with unprecedented precision, making a tangible difference where it matters most.

With N.O.D.I.C.E., we are not just reacting to challenges; we are proactively shaping a safer, more resilient future for New Orleans.

Community Engagement and Grassroots Involvement with NODICE:

Recent coverage of the NODICE initiative underscores the vital role of Neighborhood Associations, community advocates, and grassroots organizations in shaping the future of public safety and quality of life in our city. By working with key partners like Professor Joe Givens and an interfaith coalition of leaders, the Communities of Hope model—a framework that empowers faith leaders to engage their congregations in identifying their top priorities. At a recent public session held at Holy Faith Temple, community members and leaders came together to discuss these priorities and collaborate on solutions. Some of you in this room today were part of that impactful gathering.

Forums like Communities of Hope play a pivotal role in providing public safety officials and city leaders with clear insights into what communities value most. These sessions foster unity around collective goals and ensure that community-driven priorities guide the actions of our office and other city agencies. We are committed to continuing this dialogue at every forum, ensuring that the voices of the community are heard and prioritized.

OPDA Chief of Screening, Andre Gaudin, Jr., commented, “The District Attorney’s Office is leveraging advanced technology to enhance efficiency and optimize the use of the city’s limited resources. The Risk Terrain Modeling (RTM) system pinpoints areas prone to crime by considering geographic and urban factors that contribute to criminal activity. This approach enables law enforcement agencies and stakeholders to better assess the risk of victimization across different parts of the city. By integrating data from multiple sources, such as city agencies, blighted properties, and local businesses, the RTM system offers a more comprehensive strategy for public safety compared to traditional policing methods. Supported by DICE, this system democratizes data collection, allowing for better resource allocation and strengthening collaboration with our partners at the NOPD.”
