District Attorney Jason Williams Honors NOPD Officers for Heroism During New Year’s Day Terror Attack

NEW ORLEANS, LA – Today, District Attorney Jason Williams presented awards of appreciation to three New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) officers for their extraordinary bravery and quick actions during the New Year’s Day terror attack on Bourbon Street.

The officers—Officer Jacobie Jordan, Sgt. Nigel Daggs, and Officer Christian Beyer—were recognized for their heroic efforts in neutralizing a violent suspect who posed an imminent threat to countless lives. Their swift and decisive actions under fire prevented further tragedy, saving many innocent bystanders.

Officer Jacobie Jordan, who was wounded during the incident along with another officer, who was not present at the ceremony as he continues to recover. Despite his injuries, Officer Jordan exemplified the resilience and dedication that defines New Orleans’ Finest, standing alongside his colleagues to be honored for their collective bravery.

Heroic Response in the Face of Terror: How NOPD Officers Prevented a Greater Tragedy

‘This attack was clearly intended to harm many more people. This terrorist used a 6000-pound truck as a weapon and then opened fire. He had planted explosives, which he intended to detonate. The only reason there wasn’t a greater loss of life was because of the quick work of the New Orleans Police Department. We have all heard stories of police officers and responders in other cities freezing in the face of a crisis – not the NOPD. They ran to the danger and quickly neutralized it before the attacker could cause more harm. These 3 responding officers are heroes and saved countless lives.’

Prioritizing Gratitude: Recognizing Our Heroes First

“In today’s world, we are so quick to point out what some did wrong, yet we forget to celebrate what others did right. We all know there will be some finger-pointing and several after-action reports. After-action reports are important, but before we, as a community, go too far down that path, there is something we need to do first: thank our heroes.”

Honoring Humility and Heroism: Recognizing NOPD Officers for Their Courage and Commitment

What is perhaps most striking is how humble they have been throughout this process. As we coordinated this honor, each of them expressed the same sentiment—they were simply doing what they believed was expected of them when they joined the New Orleans Police Department. This humility, coupled with their bravery, is a testament to their character and their commitment to serving and protecting this city.

The ceremony was attended by members of the NOPD, colleagues from the District Attorney’s Office, community leaders, and members of the media. OPDA Staff applauded each officer as DA Williams personally presented them with commendations of appreciation.

The actions of Sgt. Nigel Daggs, Officer Christian Beyer, and Officer Jacobie Jordan on New Year’s Day highlight the profound impact of the NOPD’s dedication to public safety. Their teamwork, professionalism, and courage under fire are a reminder of the daily sacrifices made by law enforcement officers to protect the lives of others.

The District Attorney’s Office and the entire New Orleans community remain deeply grateful for the service and bravery of these officers.

The strength of this city lies in the courage of its protectors
