Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office Announces Guilty Verdict in Case of Donnell Hassell for the Murder of NOPD Officer Trevor Abney

New Orleans, LA – Wednesday, November 6, 2024, the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office (OPDA), in partnership with the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD), has announced a guilty-as-charged jury verdict in the case against Donnell Hassell, who was tried for the murder of NOPD Officer Trevor Abney and the attempted murder of Officer Brooke Duncan. This verdict follows a rigorous prosecution led by District Attorney Jason Rogers Williams and Assistant District Attorney William Dieters, alongside a dedicated team of investigators, advocates, and support staff.

District Attorney Jason Rogers Williams addressed the significance of the verdict in a press conference earlier today. He expressed deep condolences to Officer Abney’s family, whose courage and strength were essential throughout the trial process. “A unanimous Orleans Parish jury has held Donnell Hassell fully accountable,” said DA Williams, “returning guilty-as-charged verdicts on all counts, including Second Degree Murder, Attempted Second Degree Murder, and the illegal discharge of a firearm during a violent crime.”

Honoring Officer Abney’s Legacy and the Unified Efforts that Secured Justice for New Orleans

Officer Abney, a respected and beloved member of the New Orleans community, served with honor and integrity. He ultimately succumbed to injuries sustained in a violent, unprovoked ambush on him and his partner, Officer Duncan. “Officer Abney was not only a steadfast public servant but a beloved son, brother, friend, and colleague,” stated DA Williams. “His life was tragically cut short in a deliberate and calculated act of violence at the hands of Donnell Hassell – a choice that has left a lasting impact on his family, his partner, and our entire city.”

The jury’s decision stands as a powerful testament to the effective partnership between the DA’s Office and the NOPD. DA Williams commended the unwavering commitment of Superintendent Kirkpatrick and Deputy Superintendent Nick Gernon, as well as 8th District Captain Lejon Roberts, whose collaborative efforts were crucial in building a strong case against Hassell. Deputy Superintendent Gernon joined the DA at the press conference, where he recognized the dedicated officers and investigators who contributed to this outcome.

The DA praised the skilled work of Assistant District Attorney William Dieters, who co-counseled the case, along with Trial Assistant Dienne Jiles, Homicide Unit Investigators Liz Garcia and Adrian Malone, Chief Victim Advocate Alison Morgado, and Victim Advocate Natasha Childress. Their dedication to seeking justice for Officer Abney and his family was critical to securing this result.

Finally, DA Williams expressed heartfelt gratitude to Officer Abney’s family for their strength throughout the trial. He noted that while the verdict cannot bring Trevor back, it brings a measure of justice. “This verdict is not only a conviction; it is a message to all that we, the people of Orleans Parish, will not tolerate acts of violence against those who dedicate their lives to protecting this community,” he stated.

The Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office now looks to the sentencing phase and remains steadfast in its mission to secure full accountability in this case and to uphold justice for all victims of violence.
