OPDA SAKI Team Achieves Conviction in 2022 Sexual Assault Case Involving Disabled Victim

New Orleans, LA – April 23, 2024 – The Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) team at the District Attorney’s Office secured a significant conviction in a case involving the sexual assault of an intellectually disabled woman that occurred in 2022. The defendant, Sterling Benjamin, pleaded guilty to third-degree rape and received a 15-year sentence.

The resolution in this case followed a detailed examination and review of extremely sensitive evidence and testimony. OPDA prosecutors accepted a plea in this matter to bring this chapter of the victim’s life to a conclusion. Plea negotiations occurred only after an agreement was reached that the defendant would take full responsibility for his crimes and agree to a substantial sentence.

The survivor of Benjamin’s horrific acts endured an unthinkable violation while in her home.

The successful outcome in this case highlights the vital role of the SAKI Unit in ensuring justice for all victims, particularly those who are vulnerable and disabled.

Led by SAKI Chief Mary Glass, the team, including SAKI ADA William Dieters, victim witness advocate Vickie Landry, trial assistant Rachel Chimeno, investigator David Benelli, and facility dog Karissa Justice, worked tirelessly to prepare the case for trial. Their dedication, coupled with the outstanding investigation conducted by NOPD Sex Crimes Detective Dejan Jackson, ensured that the victim’s voice was heard throughout the legal process.

District Attorney Jason Williams emphasized the office’s commitment to ensuring that crimes against intellectually disabled individuals will not be tolerated. He reiterated that justice will always be pursued, even for the most vulnerable victims.

During the sentencing hearing, the victim’s sister passionately advocated for her, highlighting the profound impact the assault had on her sister’s life. The victim herself bravely addressed the court, expressing her gratitude to her family, law enforcement, medical professionals, and the DA’s team for their support.

Presiding Judge Nandi Campbell handed down a 15-year sentence to the defendant and issued a 15-year stay-away order of the same duration. Additionally, the defendant will be required by law to register as a sex offender for life.
