ICYMI: Part 3 of Fox 8’s Special Crime Reduction Series

New Orleans, LA – In Part 3 of Fox 8’s series, Thanh Truong explores the forward-thinking strategies New Orleans is implementing to address and reduce violent crime. The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD), the NOLA Coalition, the District Attorney’s Office (OPDA), and local community leaders shine a spotlight on impactful efforts that have contributed to a noticeable improvement in public safety. This unified approach—fusing cutting-edge technology, active community engagement, and vital nonprofit support—reinforces the powerful message that safeguarding our communities is a responsibility shared by all.

New Orleans Police Department: Leveraging Technology and Building Trust

NOPD has reported marked improvements in its violent crime clearance rates, achieving a clearance rate of 76% for homicide cases in August, compared to past rates often below 50%. Detective James Fyfe, who has personally cleared 18 consecutive homicide cases, credits this progress to the enhanced use of technology and real-time crime center cameras strategically placed around the city. The steady increase in public cooperation has been crucial, with community members stepping forward to provide key testimonies and act as witnesses.

The Role of the NOLA Coalition:

Sustaining Community Investment

The NOLA Coalition, formed by business and civic leaders in response to a previous spike in violent crime, has committed to a three-year goal of raising $15 million to support local nonprofits. With over $8 million raised in the past two years, the coalition has funded programs focusing on youth mentorship, sports, job training, and mental health. These investments show results, with juvenile homicides declining by 71% over the past year.

Local Heroes:

Making a Difference One Child at a Time

Founder Derrick Henderson, who runs the nonprofit “Don’t Stop Dreaming” has dedicated his life to mentoring young people. With newfound support from the NOLA Coalition, Henderson emphasizes that these opportunities are essential to breaking the cycle of violence, noting that community support and access to positive activities have made a significant difference.

Community leaders agree that New Orleans’ crime reduction strategy depends on ongoing collaboration among law enforcement, residents, and community organizations. This partnership has not only contributed to lower crime rates but has also strengthened the bond between the public and those serving to protect them.
