ICYMI: DA Jason Williams Addresses Nation in Wake of Bourbon Street Tragedy

New Orleans, Louisiana—a city renowned for its vibrant culture, rich heritage, and indomitable spirit—has felt the weight of this event on an intensely personal level. It was not merely an assault on our beloved hometown; it was an affront to our entire nation and the cherished way of life that unites us all.

We extend our profound gratitude to the dedicated men and women of the New Orleans Police Department, whose courage and swift action undoubtedly saved countless lives. We also commend the diligent work of the FBI and its counterterrorism experts for quickly analyzing massive amounts of data, reconstructing the perpetrator’s actions, and clarifying the events leading up to this situation. Their commitment to safeguarding our community reminds us that in the face of adversity, we stand united and unyielding.

“These types of attacks using a vehicle to carry out this carnage may be unique to New Orleans, but they are not uncommon globally. Since 2015, there have been dozens of incidents that have occurred in other countries such as France, Germany, and Belgium. There will undoubtedly be an after action analysis to examine everything that led to this horrific act of terrorism and to determine how New Orleans can enhance its preparedness moving forward.” -District Attorney Williams

“This attack was clearly intended to harm even more people. The truck was used as a weapon, and then he opened fire and had explosives ready to inflict further damage. The only reason there wasn’t more loss of life is because of the swift response from the New Orleans Police Department. We’ve all heard stories of departments freezing in the face of crisis—not the NOPD. They ran toward the danger and quickly neutralized it before he could cause more harm. They are heroes, and I am deeply grateful to them.”
