St. Augustine High School Hosts “Democracy Under Pressure” Assembly Ahead of Election Day

New Orleans, LA  (November 4, 2024) – St. Augustine High School was proud to host their “Democracy Under Pressure” ahead of this year’s election, an impactful event dedicated to deepening students’ understanding of the intersection between law and democracy. This assembly, organized by Judge Rhonda Good Douglas and Arlinda Westbrook, active and committed members of the school’s Parent-Teacher Association, was designed to spark conversations around key legal issues shaping our society. By engaging students directly, the event emphasized the importance of civic participation and underscored the value of informed citizenship.

The program consisted of five sessions, with a primary panel discussion on Criminal Justice Reform and its vital connection to policing. The panel featured prominent local leaders, including District Attorney Jason Williams, Chief Michael Harrison, Judge Rhonda Good Douglas, and Sheriff Susan Hutson. District Attorney Williams led the conversation, with a particular focus on his office’s Civil Rights Division (CRD) and the pivotal role it plays in upholding justice and reckoning with the sins of the past.

Empowering Tomorrow’s Decision-Makers: Engaging Students in Civic Responsibility and the Importance of Democratic Participation

Throughout the day, students were encouraged to actively take part in sessions covering a broad range of relevant topics, including the significance of the 2024 election. The event was thoughtfully structured to facilitate in-depth discussions and provide students with a comprehensive view of the legal landscape, emphasizing how their participation in the election process can contribute to our society’s trajectory as a whole.

Students had the invaluable opportunity to pose questions, fostering a dynamic exchange that bridged the gap between theory and real-world application. The interactive format aimed to instill a deeper understanding of civic responsibility, legal rights, and the role of each individual in a democratic society.

Arlinda Westbrook, a lead organizer, expressed the significance of the event’s timing: “Hosting Democracy Under Pressure the day before the election adds a layer of urgency and relevance to the conversation. Our goal is to help students grasp the importance of their voices in shaping their futures, especially as they grow into the roles of tomorrow’s decision-makers.”
