Working with community and law enforcement agencies to prevent and deter hate crimes.
Under Louisiana law, hate crimes are certain crimes committed against persons or property because of actual or perceived:
An incident is not a hate crime just because the victim belongs to a protected category; rather, the suspect needs to have targeted or harmed the victim because of a protected category.
An individual convicted of a hate crime may receive added penalties in addition to those imposed for the underlying offense. La. R.S. 14:107.2
If you have been the victim of, or witnessed, a hate crime, you should report it to the police immediately. If you are seriously injured, seek medical attention without delay and document any physical injuries, even minor ones. If the crime involves vandalism, allow the police to see and photograph the damage before you clean or repair anything.
