District Attorney Jason Williams Announces New Grand Jury Indictment For The Murder Of 18-Year-Old Edna Karr Student-Athlete, Keyron Ross

Orleans Parish Grand Jury indicts three other individuals for violent crimes

NEW ORLEANS – Today, District Attorney Jason Williams announced Grand Jury decisions in the murder case of the 18-year-old Edna Karr High School student-athlete Keyron Ross; Tyrese Carter was indicted on charges of Second Degree Murder with a Firearm and Obstruction of Justice.

“The senseless violence that took the life of Edna Karr student Keyron Ross was a tough moment for our community. And, we remain committed to securing justice for the Ross family and the entire Edna Karr High School community,” said District Attorney Jason Williams. “Through this indictment and the others, we are surging back against crime. The people of New Orleans can rest assured that we will do everything in our power to ensure that those who commit violent offenses are held accountable.”

According to the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) reports, Ross was murdered, while sitting in his vehicle, on January 26, 2021, in the 3800 block of Texas Drive. Later that day, Carter surrendered to the NOPD and admitted to shooting Ross.

In addition to Carter, the Orleans Parish Grand Jury indicted Lorenzo Oliver on charges of First Degree Rape and Second Degree Kidnapping. Oliver was arrested for the rape and kidnapping of a 12-year-old on Lauradale Street in December 2021. The Grand Jury also indicted Lentin Van Buren on charges of Second-Degree Murder, Armed Robbery Obstruction of Justice, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Possession of Cocaine. Van Buren was arrested for murder in November 2021 on Chef Menteur Highway. Lastly, Clay Landry was indicted on charges of Second Degree Murder, Second Degree Battery, and Obstruction of Justice. Landry was arrested for murder in December 2021 on Lamanche Street.

Each of these indictments are proof positive of a commitment to increase safety, and the DA’s Office looks forward to ensuring appropriate accountability for crime in our neighborhoods.

In addition to securing Grand Jury indictments, the DA’s Office secured 90 guilty pleas during the month of March for violent offenses bringing the total number of guilty pleas secured in 2022 to 285. Last year, despite court closures due to COVID-19, OPDA secured over 3500 guilty pleas across over 1700 cases.

These indictments build on the work of prosecutors to secure convictions in all cases tried in court since the resumption of jury trials.
