NEW ORLEANS – The Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office (OPDA) secured the conviction of Donte Evans stemming from an incident in New Orleans East. Led by OPDA trial team members Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs) Zachary Creel and Mark Nguyen, the jury found defendant Evans guilty of Aggravated Assault with a Motor Vehicle on a Peace Officer.
District Attorney Jason Williams said, “The men and women of the New Orleans Police Department work hard every single day to keep our communities safe. I am hopeful that this conviction delivered in a court of law for the senseless and reckless actions of the defendant will send a clear message to the community that our office is committed to increasing safety in New Orleans for all residents. I am grateful for the hard work of Assistant District Attorneys Zachary Creel and Mark Nguyen for securing this conviction as a combined effort to protect our City’s officers, who do their very best every day to protect the City of New Orleans and its people.”
Evans was arrested after being pulled over for exceeding the speed limit in a school zone and deliberately attempting to strike the responding officer with his vehicle on March 24, 2022, in the 7200 block of Chef Menteur Highway.
The trial took place in Section K of Criminal District Court; Judge Marcus O. Delarge presided. The sentencing date is set for June 12, 2023. The defendant now faces one to ten years in prison.
