DA’s Office Secures Conviction for 2020 New Year’s Day Manslaughter in Uptown New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS –This week, the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office (OPDA) secured the conviction of Jermal Williams stemming from a shooting incident in Uptown New Orleans. Following a three-day jury trial led by OPDA trial team members Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs) Andre Jeanfreau and Adele Krieger, the jury found defendant Williams guilty of Manslaughter, Obstruction of Justice and Illegal Possession of a Firearm By Felon.

District Attorney Jason Williams said, “This trial presented many challenges, but our team of ADAs Andre Jeanfreau and Adele Krieger, Victim Witness Coordinator Jasmine Hillyer, and Trial Assistant Erin Fuenning, overcame them all & worked tirelessly to secure a conviction for the victims of this crime. Our mission is to send a clear message to offenders that violent crime in our streets will not be tolerated in New Orleans.”

According to NOPD reports, on January 1, 2020, the victim was shot and killed in the 3400 block of South Claiborne Street after suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Surveillance footage captured the defendant’s vehicle at the crime scene and ballistic reports matched a firearm at the defendant’s residence to casings at the scene. Williams was arrested on April 20, 2020.

The trial took place in Section B of Criminal District Court; veteran jurist and Deputy Chief Judge Tracey Flemings-Davillier presided. The sentencing date is set for October 6th, 2023. The defendant faces a total of 100 years in prison. 40 years on a Manslaughter charge, 40 years on the Obstruction of Justice charge and 20 years on the Illegal Possession of a Firearm By Felon charge.
