District Attorney’s Office Begins 2022 Securing More Guilty Pleas For Violent Crimes

NEW ORLEANS – Last year, despite suspensions of jury trials for long periods of time due to COVID-19 induced court closures, the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office (OPDA) continued to secure guilty pleas to ensure appropriate accountability for crime in our neighborhoods. During the first week of 2022, that focus has continued with 22 new guilty pleas secured for offenses including theft of a motor vehicle, illegal use of weapons, domestic violence and aggravated assault with a firearm.

RECENT GUILTY PLEAS BUILD OFF OF Q4 FELONY CASE ACCEPTANCES:

  • As of January 1, 2021, OPDA reports show over 72% of cases accepted in the previous 90 days were felony cases including numerous violent crimes.
  • Last year, OPDA secured over 3500 guilty pleas across over 1700 cases.

District Attorney Jason Williams said, “Despite public chatter, reports and and the challenges of COVID, this office remains committed to increasing safety for the people of New Orleans. From day 1, we have been laser focused on violent crime and holding those who cause harm in our communities accountable. This has not changed and we look forward to continuing to secure justice for victims and their families in New Orleans.”
